I started this blog a couple of years ago, somehow that time has passed, and one of the first ideas I had was to configure the all-time Louisville City starting lineup in my estimation. Some time has passed and now it is time to revisit this topic. A couple of big caveats before I begin: This is my opinion, you are welcome to disagree. The evaluation only accounted for what the player did while they were here. This sucked. Louisville City’s pedigree and amount of talented personnel made this a very tough process. No more stalling….
My formation of choice is a 3-5-2. This was the lineup for the majority of City’s history, especially under Danny Cruz, and makes the most sense for the players I had at my disposal.
GK: Goalie is, ironically, not a source of strength in City’s history. The franchise has had a number of goalies, with some of their best being loanees. Ben Lundt won USL Goalie of the Year while on loan in 2020 and Damian Las spent two seasons with Louisville City on loan from Austin.
That made my selection of Greg Ranjitsingh all the easier. Greg was an original roster member in 2015, though he served as Scotty Goodwin’s backup. He took over in 2016 after Goodwin’s retirement and went on to win two USL Cups, including a starring role in City finally defeating NYRB2 on penalties in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2017. He was the first LouCity player to be called up by their national team as he was unused sub for Trinidad and Tobago. Greg would leave in 2018 for MLS Orlando City.
CB: This is a strong position group for LouCity. Wes Charpie was an ironman for Louisville with 115 appearances over his 5 years. Paco Craig, earned two All League First Team awards and one Second Team in his three years here, and enough yellow cards to last a lifetime!
Sean Totsch, Right Centerback. The easiest inclusion on this list. The man has made the USL All League FIVE times for Louisville: three First Team awards and two Second team awards. He has won two USL Cups. He has created an iconic legacy with his “tucked in, locked in” moniker. He will likely go down as the greatest player in Louisville City history, and somehow has never won USL Defender of the Year….
Josh Wynder, Middle Centerback. Louisville native Wynder will likely go down as the greatest product of this franchise. He started playing for LouCity as a teenager, and though he only logged 38 total appearances, he broke the league record transfer fee when he signed for Benfica in 2023 for $1.2 million.
Kyle Adams, Left Centerback. The current captain has done nothing but win since arriving from San Diego. He is your reigning USL Defender of the Year and has led LouCity to back-to-back Players’ Shields.
Outside Backs: This was another group with some difficult decisions. Kyle Smith was the definition of dependability at right back before moving to MLS. Manny Perez has worked his way into the hearts of LouCity fans over his two stints.
Oscar Jimenez, Right Wingback. Oscar won two USL Cups, one USL First Team, is fourth all-time in appearances at 205, and second in assists at 39. Oscar could be relied on to man either outside back position. Not bad for a player signed from a tryout.
Jonathan Gomez, Left Wingback. Jogo, was here for two memorable seasons that included winning the USL Young Player of the Year and being named to the USL First Team. He made a big transfer to Real Sociedad to end his LouCity career.
Midfield: This is where I had to split hairs and make some tough decisions. This is arguably the strongest positional group in franchise history. The selection is so strong that two-time USL Cup winner, and one-time All League First Team member, Speedy Williams didn’t make it.
Paolo DelPiccolo. The longest serving captain in franchise history was an easy selection for this article. He has 242 total appearances, 23 goals, 19 assists, and one USL Cup MVP award for marking Didier Drogba all night (unconfirmed reports if Drogba is still in his back pocket.)
Taylor Davila. One of two active City players to make the list, Davila has done nothing but be exceptional since arriving in 2024. He has made back-to-back All League First Team’s and won the MVP award in 2025. He has registered 24 assists so far, including back-to-back seasons of 9.
Magnus Rasmussen. I question how many City fans remember how critical Magnus Rasmussen was to the success of the franchise. Yes, he did score the opening goal in the history of the team. Magnus was deadly with the ball with his feet anywhere around the box, as evidenced by his 29 career goals. He has one USL Cup to his name and one USL All League First Team award in 2019.
Forwards: For all of the success LouCity has earned over its existence, it has done so with a strong group of strikers, but not a well-developed group of wingers. The winger included in this XI was an easy choice: Brian Ownby. There was never really an argument for others. The striker decision came down to Cam Lancaster vs. Wilson Harris. While I respect all that Harris has accomplished for LouCity, it was an easy decision
Cam Lancaster, Striker. Cam was a Year 1 original; the problem was he was out hurt all year! That is a familiarly sad story in the career of Cam. When healthy he was the most prolific player in franchise history. His 88 career goals for LouCity are unlikely to ever be topped and he secured three USL All League teams, two First Team’s and one Second Team. He broke the season scoring record in 2018. He scored the winning goal in LouCity’s first USL Cup triumph in 2017.
Brian Ownby, Winger. All Brian Ownby ever did in Louisville was become a club legend and maybe the most beloved player in franchise history. I could also be describing his immaculate beard. Ownby arrived in Louisville in 2017 and became the most dynamic player in team history. He is the all-time assist leader at 46, registered over 200 appearances, and scored 35 goals. When Brian Ownby got on the ball, there was an electricity and buzz in the stadium unlike any other to don the purple. It is still an active criminal investigation how he never earned a single USL All League selection….The biggest problem with my starting attacking duo is their health, as Ownby also struggled with fitness during his time in Louisville!
Bench:
GK: Ben Lundt. Part of the illustrious loan army that City has trotted out at Goalie, Lundt registered an All League First Team in 2020 as well as winning USL Goalkeeper of the Year.
DF: Aiden McFadden. McFadden has quickly become a leader and the heart of the current team. He is versatile, able to play any of the defensive positions, and earned a USL All League First Team selection in 2025.
DF: Paco Craig. By putting his name on this list I think he earned a yellow. Beyond his penchant for yellows, he also had a penchant for All League teams: two First Team selections and one Second Team selection
MF: Speedy Williams. Speedy was the best defensive midfielder this franchise will likely ever see. He earned an All League First Team selection in 2020 and in his career has won four USL Cups, including the two in LouCity’s history.
MF: Niall McCabe. He is Louisville City. He is the heart and soul of this franchise. Niall only appears in the top 5 of any LouCity category for appearances at 224. He is on this list on the bench because there isn’t a Louisville City without Niall McCabe.
FW: George Davis IV. Davis was the type of soccer player to put his head down and go to work. He never earned any individual accolades while playing in Louisville, but registered 123 appearances and 23 goals.
FW: Wilson Harris. If it were not for Cam Lancaster, Harris would be the runaway starter at Striker on this side. Harris scored 43 times for Louisville city.
So that is my all-time XI for Louisville City in the year of our Lord 2026. I did not take this task lightly and still don’t feel 100% convinced I nailed it, but you reach a certain point where all you continue doing is arguing with yourself. Leave a comment for anyone I missed! I will be very interested to return this in a couple of years time and see where we are at!
